When you read about the torture and punishments which were meted out in castles over the centuries, it is not surprising that many of them are haunted. If you have ever been to a medieval castle believed to be haunted, you will know what we mean. These castles seem to have an atmosphere all their own, something you can sense, intangible but very real. We have visited numerous haunted castles and although we have yet to see a ghost we have definitely sensed these place as being apart from the rest.

We take a close look at some of the stories and indeed legends that abound about haunted castles - castles in England, castles in Ireland, castles in Scotland and castles in Wales in particular. In time we plan to cover haunted castles in other countries too.

Most haunted medieval castles were the scene of many a night of medieval entertainment. Sometimes it consisted of music and dance but there was undoubtedly the occasional game of cards as well. Certainly in England and Europe, playing cards can be traced back to the late 14th century and although the rules for caribbean poker for example had not yet been invented, cards were nevertheless quite a popular medieval past time.
